Peaks Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Peaks is a long left-hand point break, and one of the longest single-section points in New Zealand. It breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and the paddle-out between the rocky outcrops is tricky. When it's on, it holds full-speed walls, hollow pockets, and technical sections that experienced surfers can link for the full kilometre back to the beach. The take-off is a sucky launch straight into the barrel, so less-experienced surfers are better off riding the sweep down to one of the many other entry points.

When It Works

Peaks draws swell from southwest to west (SW-W), and southwest is the best match. It's a consistent point, so it breaks reliably whenever there's swell in the water. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.

Wind and Tide

Look for a south offshore wind to clean it up. The point works at low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave, from the sucky take-off through the fast, technical walls. Expect a busy lineup when it's working.

Access

There's a car park with free parking.
