Overview
Pegasus Bay is a 50km sandy sweep offering a long string of beachbreaks and a single point. It starts in the north with a left-hand point called Fossils, reached by 4WD, then runs south through the beachbreaks at Amberley, Leithfield, Waikuku and Pines. At the southern end, the shifting bars of the Waimakariri Rivermouth pull surfers in for their lefts and rights, while whitebait fishermen work the same water. The river pushes cold, muddy water across those rivermouth peaks.
When It Works
Every wave here breaks over sand, so the beaches serve up both lefts and rights that move around with the banks. The bay draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with an east (E) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and stays moderately consistent. The rivermouth bars come into their own at low tide.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west (W) offshore to clean things up. The beaches will take low, mid or high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call. Tide choice leans heavily on size: small swell can struggle to break at high, with the opposite true on bigger days.
Local Tips
This is friendly territory for beginners, and the lineup stays fairly quiet.
Access
The rivermouth peaks are best reached from Kaiapoi, the town on the north side. Nearby you'll find restrooms, showers and camping, plus a car park with free parking and roadside parking.
