Overview
Penascal is a fairly heavy right-hander breaking over rock, and it rewards surfers who are willing to work for it. The wave is bowly and shallow, shifty and a bit technical, with occasional rock hazards, but the ride can be long when you connect it. It stays thick and moves a lot of water, and it picks up plenty of swell, so it's a consistently good place to check. Mastering it is another matter. The water is clean, and the main thing to watch out for is turning your back to the ocean.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from west to north-northwest (W-NNW) and works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, which puts the rideable range at overhead and up. Autumn and winter are the seasons to focus on, with the broader window running March through October. It's a decent wave when everything lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind, though the workable wind window is wide, running from north-northeast through east to south-southeast (NNE-E-SSE). Low tide is the call here, and a rising tide is generally better. Be aware that low tide is also when the wave ledges through certain sections, which sharpens things up considerably.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable in thick, shifty waves. Bring a shortboard for the smaller end of the range and a gun once it gets serious. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved.
