Overview
Pensacola Pier is a pier break on the Emerald Coast, named for the green tint of the water. It picks up both rights and lefts, with sand on the inside and a rock reef further out. It's a decent spot overall, and the pier itself offers some welcome wind protection. One side can be far better than the other depending on how the sand has stacked up, so it's worth checking both before you paddle out.
When It Works
The break draws swell from east-southeast through south to southwest and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.3 m / 14 ft. It handles size well and has been seen holding hurricane surf at three times overhead. Spring, autumn, and winter are the seasons to watch, along with hurricane swells. Paddling out is fairly easy on average days but gets more demanding as the swell picks up.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the north-northwest (NNW), with a workable wind window running from west-northwest through north to northeast. The spot works on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
There's room for a range of boards here, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards, and it suits everyone from beginners up to experts. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, thinnest during off hours and busiest after 3 p.m. and on weekends. The big left is no place to take lightly and demands real respect.
Access
Parking is limited up in Pedro Point, so be polite and mindful of where you leave the car.
