Pepinos is a predominantly left-hand boulder reef tucked into a small bend in the coast. The lefts run fast with barrel potential and open into nice inside shoulders for cutbacks and snaps. It breaks over boulders and sand, and while the left is the main event, it can throw up rights too.
When It Works
This is a consistent reef that draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with south the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, but it doesn't like too much swell, and the line-up can shift around depending on the swell direction.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to clean it up. The break is fully exposed to south-southwest wind and cops it full on, so an early session is the smart move before it comes onshore. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Pepinos suits intermediate surfers, with the speed and power of the wave adding to the challenge. Thanks to its isolation, expect a fairly quiet lineup.
Access
Getting here is half the mission. The track is tricky to find and then negotiate, winding through farmland tracks to a deserted beach, so it's best to go with someone who knows the way. There's free roadside parking when you arrive.
