Periscopes surf guide

Periscopes is a surf spot that requires a 40-minute walk to get there, but the paddle-out is just a short 100 meters. It’s mostly suitable for expert surfers who are looking for a challenge. This wave works best with a solid south swell, and it can hold up to double overhead when the conditions are right. Expect to share the waves since it’s a popular spot for tube riding, especially for natural footers.

The wave breaks over dead coral and typically peels to the right. It’s ideal when the swell is coming from the south or southwest, handling sizes from about 4 feet (1.2 meters) and can reach up to double overhead. For the best experience, hit it early in the morning with a high tide since the wave needs plenty of water over the reef to push through the barrel. A northeast wind is preferable to keep the conditions cleaner.

While it’s not a beginner-friendly spot, if you’ve got the skills, Periscopes can offer some really fun rides. Just be prepared for some competition in the lineup, as it tends to attract a good crowd, especially on prime surf days.
