Overview
Piedra del Lobo is the first wave in Antofagasta, a classic left that peels along an uneven reef. This W-NW-facing stretch of coast between Antofagasta and Cabo Jara sets up some good lefthand walls, and Piedra del Lobo is the standout, with rides up to 100 metres long and size holding up to 9 ft (2.8 m). Wipe-outs can be heavy here, though the rocks are no real threat.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and it lines up best on a southwest (SW) swell. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving plenty of range from smaller days up to serious size. Consistency is moderate, so it has worthwhile windows rather than waves on tap.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean up the wall. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate left, best for surfers who are comfortable copping the occasional heavy wipe-out. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. To find your spot in the lineup, use the two purple poles on shore as your marker.
