Overview
Pinetrees is a reef break that serves up both left and right peaks over an uneven, rocky reef. It rarely turns on perfect, but it's a dependable spot for intermediate surfers after rideable walls rather than flawless ones.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from a wide window running south to north (S-N), with a west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, leaving plenty of scope between too small and too big. Waves show up across spring, summer, autumn, and winter, with winter leaning on northwest groundswell and summer picking up south swell. It stays fairly consistent through the year and is at its most reliable in summer, when it can get good at chest-to-overhead on the right day, though it's usually average.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the east (E). Mornings are the play here, usually light and clean before an afternoon seabreeze fills in and roughs things up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Pinetrees suits a wide quiver, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, bodyboards, and SUPs, and it's a comfortable step up for intermediate surfers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup that can feel somewhat reserved, so a little humility and respect go a long way. Keep in mind the bottom is reef, with rocks and urchins to watch for.
Access
Getting in is easy, with a paved road leading straight to the spot. There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking, and camping is available nearby.
