Pipeline & Backdoor Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Pipeline & Backdoor is the most famous wave on the planet, a heaving barrel that detonates over an uneven lava-slab reef only about 80 metres off Ehukai Beach Park on Oahu's North Shore. It's really two waves sharing one peak: Pipeline, the legendary left, and Backdoor, the super-hollow right that funnels across the shallow reef toward Off-The-Wall. Outer reefs refract and focus arriving swell onto the inside reef, so a wave that looks absent on a flat day can come roaring back to life when the right swell shows up. It's rated among the best waves in the world.

When It Works

Pipe draws swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the optimal direction that lines up the outer-reef refraction and makes it fire. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft. The left leans on outer reefs to bend a WNW-NW swell into a long wall that hits First Reef and throws a heavy, guillotining lip; as the swell swings further northwest, Backdoor opens up as a hollow right. Even at smaller sizes it breaks hard and holds enormous power. The season runs autumn through winter into spring, and the spot is moderately consistent, though it can all but disappear during flat summer spells.

Wind and Tide

The offshore wind direction is southeast (SE), and calm or light easterly-to-southerly winds are all part of the workable window. Pipe can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave built for shortboards, guns, and bodyboards. Expect a very busy lineup whenever it's on, though the atmosphere is very friendly. Humility and respect go a long way out here.

Access

Ehukai Beach Park sits right in front of the break, with a car park offering free parking plus roadside parking, though spaces fill fast when the surf is good. Facilities include restrooms, showers, and lifeguards on the beach.
