Overview
Playa Cambutal is a sand-bottomed beachbreak fronting the hotel of the same name, with fun, cruisey peaks that suit every ability. It peels both left and right and keeps a relaxed, forgiving feel. The town around it is growing, with more places to stay opening up. Just out of town, Punta Negra is a reliable reef peak you can spot right from the road.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southeast through south to west (SE-S-W), and a southwest swell is the best match. Waves break over sand and stay consistent, so there is usually something to ride. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north offshore wind to clean things up. It works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
A gentle, forgiving beachbreak, it is a solid pick for beginners, and the western end offers some shelter as outside reefs filter the swell. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it is on.
