Overview
Playa de las Mujeres is a secluded beachbreak on the south of Gran Canaria, tucked into a cove with clear water and striking scenery, including nearby Montaña Arena. It is a well-known nudist beach. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right, and the standout feature is a heavy backwash that bodyboarders use as a launch ramp for inverted airs, 720s, and other radical maneuvers.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southeast through south (SE-S), with south swell the best match, and in practice it really only fires on south swells. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Expect it to be very inconsistent, so it pays to catch it when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind to clean up the faces. This is a mid-tide beach, with mid tide best and a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
The sandy, forgiving setup makes it approachable for beginners when it is small and clean. It gets busy, especially through the summer months when the cove fills up, and when it works you can expect plenty of bodyboarders making the most of that backwash.
