Playa Manzanillo is a Costa Rican reef break where offshore reefs shape both lefts and rights over a patchy mix of uneven reef and sand. It can be fickle, rewarding surfers who are dialed in when it turns on, while the beach itself stays mellow enough for kids and first-timers.
When It Works
The offshore reefs draw swell from west to northwest, and a northwest (NW) swell is the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there is a decent window of size to play with. Expect it to be moderately consistent, coming together properly only when the swell really lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. It can break across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, with fun lefts and rights on the reef when it is on and a gentle beach for anyone still learning. Expect a moderately busy lineup on the good days, with locals and expats coming out on weekends when it is working.
