Playa Nosara is a long crescent of black sand, separated from neighbouring Ostional by only a thin ribbon of rock. It's a friendly beach break that has drawn crowds of surf schools and beginners over the years, with peaks that run from knee to head high. There's not much power behind them, but they still hold good shape. The town of Nosara itself has grown into a major coastal hub with plenty of lodging and surf camps.
When It Works
The sand-bottom peaks break both left and right and pull in swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Waves here are consistent, so there's usually something rideable on offer.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The beach can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The manageable, forgiving peaks make this an easy place to learn, and it's a natural fit for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
