Surfing in Guanacaste

Guanacaste is Costa Rica's northern Pacific surf region, a warm-water coastline where consistent west and southwest swell meets long stretches of sand and a scattering of reefs and points. Running along the Nicoya Peninsula and the beaches to its north, the province picks up groundswell from the southwest through the west and northwest, so most beaches stay rideable across a wide window rather than depending on one narrow direction.

Beach breaks define the region. The majority of the surf here breaks over sand, with a smaller number of reef and point setups mixed in for surfers chasing cleaner shape. That balance makes Guanacaste approachable: beginner and intermediate waves outnumber the heavier expert setups, and gentle beach peaks sit along the same coast that holds a few serious walls when the swell jumps. Beginner-friendly picks include Avellana, Ostional, and Witches Rock (Roca Bruja), while more notable waves for surfers who want punch include Langosta and Ostional.

Tamarindo is the region's main hub and a natural base, with several breaks in easy reach and a spread of ability levels nearby. Other clusters sit around Santa Marta, Hacienda Naranjo, and Brasilito, giving you room to move up or down the coast as the wind and swell shift. Example spots such as Tamarindo, Avellana, and Camaronal show the range, from mellow town beaches to more exposed, consistent sand.

Wind is the daily deciding factor. Offshore conditions come from the northeast and east, which is why dawn sessions matter so much here; mornings are usually cleanest before the sea breeze turns onshore, and the dry-season trades keep those early windows glassy for long stretches. Most spots work best from mid to high tide, though a fair number still break on the lower tide, so you can often find something rideable across much of the cycle.

On size, many beaches start showing surf around 2 to 3 feet and hold into the head-high-plus range, while the more exposed beaches and reefs can handle swells up to 10 to 12 feet on the biggest days. Shortboards and fish suit the punchier peaks, and funboards or longboards make sense on the smaller, slower days that come through often.

For most of the year the setup lines up well, with the strongest run of clean surf through the spring and summer swell seasons. If you are planning a trip built around surf spots in Guanacaste, base yourself near Tamarindo, watch for a west or southwest swell, and aim for a morning session before the wind swings onshore.
