Overview
Playa Reina sits near Mariato and serves up a spread of rocky peaks that break both left and right, best suited to intermediate surfers and up. Just to the south you'll find a string of good beachbreaks at Playas Torio, Mata Oscura and Plaza, along with some lined-up lefts near Punta Duarte and the rivermouths.
When It Works
The peaks break over a mix of uneven reef and sand, picking up swell from the south through southwest, with southwest swell the best match. It's a consistent spot with a broad working range, usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean things up. It works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly wave, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet when it's on.
Access
There's camping close by, along with free roadside parking. Mariato also has beachfront accommodation geared toward surfers and fishermen.
