Playa Santana is a heavy, peaky beachbreak that throws up wedging peaks over a sand bottom with a few rocks on the inside. A river mouth feeds the sandbar and helps keep the peaks in shape, and the waves run both left and right. It's a powerful wave that can barrel, so it rewards confident intermediates who are comfortable with steep drops.
When It Works
Santana draws swell from the south through west, with west (W) swell the best match. It's a consistent beachbreak that works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. The peaks stay powerful even on smaller swells, and the barrel sections get throatier as the size builds. You'll usually find a couple of main peaks down the beach, sometimes more depending on the swell, with the first peaks the most defined. It surfs well from spring through autumn.
Wind and Tide
The best wind is calm or a light northeast (NE) offshore. Santana works across low, mid, and high tide, but it comes into its own as the water fills in, with a rising tide the better call. On lower tides it tends to run smaller, drained-out and sectiony, then reliably improves as the tide pushes back in.
Local Tips
Expect a busy but friendly lineup when it's on. It suits intermediate surfers and takes a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and bodyboards. After heavy rain the river can push out debris and murky water, so keep an eye on what's floating around you.
Access
Unless you're staying on the Rancho Santana estate or come in with a local, Santana is really only reachable by boat. Otherwise, take the access road in and park on the beach by the hut. Parking is restricted.
