Overview
Poetto is the main surf spot in Cagliari, spread along the city's 6 km beach. Waves break over sand and peel both left and right, but they lean slow and crumbly rather than powerful. Water quality is only mediocre, and the whole setup has an easygoing, forgiving feel rather than a performance edge.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from east through south, with southeast swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so you want a bit of size in the water before it comes alive. Those slow, mellow walls are ideal for getting time on your feet, which is a big part of Poetto's appeal.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind, though onshore wind makes little difference to the already gentle waves. Poetto works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly wave, and as the main spot in town it stays busy. Expect a crowded lineup whenever there is something to ride.
Access
Sitting right on Cagliari's city beach, Poetto has all the facilities you would expect, with several surf shops close by. Parking is free, with roadside spots along the beachfront.
