Pohoiki Surf Forecast Guide

Pohoiki is a lava-reef spot with three separate bays, each offering a different wave over an uneven reef. The bottom is extremely sharp lava rock dotted with urchins, so it pays to avoid contact at all times.

Overview

The three bays give you options. First Bay sits closest to the boat ramp, with a wave that suits all levels and warm water from nearby volcanic springs. Second Bay lies a little further out in slightly cooler water and throws a more hollow, faster wave for advanced surfers. Third Bay, around a small rocky outcrop to the south, is hollow and fast over shallow water, and can turn into a solid big-wave spot when a strong swell meets west-to-north wind.

When It Works

Pohoiki is a right-hander that draws swell from east to south (E-S), with northeast (NE) the best direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, ranging from chest-high to well overhead depending on the bay and what you're after. It's moderately consistent and can get good year-round, though quality is often held back by breezy onshore trades. Your best window tends to be early morning, or when a passing front brings lighter wind and a solid swell.

Wind and Tide

Look for offshore wind from the northwest (NW). The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The break rewards intermediate surfers, and it's versatile enough for shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, bodyboards, and guns depending on the day and the bay. Expect a quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved, so a humble, respectful approach goes a long way. Keep the sharp lava and urchins in mind every time you paddle out.
