Point Dume State Beach/Westward Beach/Drainpipes surf guide

Point Dume State Beach, also known as Westward Beach or Drainpipes, is a coastal spot located in California. This area features a mix of beautiful sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. The surf is primarily known for its challenging waves, making it popular among more experienced surfers. It's accessible through a pay-lot at the south end of Westward Beach Road.

The surf at Point Dume can be fickle, with the best action coming from south or west swells. It handles swell sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and typically breaks over sand. Waves can break both left and right, but they tend to be heavier and more powerful, so it's generally not recommended for beginners. The preferable wind direction is northeast, and you can catch some decent rides during low, mid, and high tides. However, be cautious of the shorepound and currents, especially with west swells, as they can make conditions tricky.

If you decide to surf here, be prepared for some intense sessions. The sandbar peaks can produce heavy tubes when conditions align just right, but always keep an eye on the wave height and your own skill level. It's a spot that demands respect and is best suited for those who know what they're doing.
