Point Reyes (north) is a sand-bottomed beach break on the north side of the Point Reyes peninsula, throwing both lefts and rights. Quality here is on the modest side, and as a shifting sandbar break it can be fickle, so treat it as a spot to watch rather than count on. Spring is the window to keep an eye on it.
When It Works
The break draws swell from west to north-northwest, and it's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Spring is the season it tends to come to life, and being a beach break over sand, it rewards patience when the sandbanks and swell line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running east to south. It works through mid and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate and expert surfers, and a shortboard or funboard will cover the range of conditions. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and the atmosphere can feel a little reserved.
Access
From Highway 1 just south of Point Reyes Station, turn west onto Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and drive 15 miles to Drakes Beach Road, then head south for two miles.
