Overview
Pointe des Trois-Bassins is a reef setup with three distinct waves that reliably pull in swell, often holding surf when everywhere else has gone flat. La Barriere is the fast, shallow right (with an odd left) that fires in any north or south swell. Most surfers head for The Peak closer to shore, where the river has cut a deep pass through the reef, forming a friendly A-frame with feathering lips and tapered shoulders. South of the cut, a fairly fat left wall occasionally links up on a due south swell.
When It Works
Breaking over an uneven reef, the spot serves up both lefts and rights and draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast, with southwest the optimal direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is good, which is why it keeps producing when nearby breaks fall quiet.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly spot, and The Peak is the most approachable of the three waves for surfers still finding their feet. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, since these waves are well-known magnets for the crowd.
