Poipu Outer Reef Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Poipu Outer Reef is a heavy, expert-level reef break on Kauai's south shore, throwing a shallow left barrel alongside a longer, more sloped right. The bottom is a mix of rock, coral and lava sitting very shallow, so it demands respect and rewards experience. Mellower, more popular waves break closer to the beach at Lemon Drops and Waiohai, and heading west past Poipu you'll find PKs, Centers, Heroins and Acid Drop, each with its own mood but all carrying the same shallow-reef risk.

When It Works

The break draws swell from southeast through south to west (SE-S-W), with occasional wrapping west-northwest swells filling in. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so you want an overhead-plus pulse to get it moving. This is primarily a summer wave that stays consistently good and clean through the warmer months, with spring and autumn also in the mix and rare winter WNW swells occasionally big enough to break out there.

Wind and Tide

Look for calm conditions or offshore wind, with north-northeast (NNE) the offshore direction and a workable window running from north-northwest through north to east. It's best on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, with the shallow left in particular safest when there's more water covering the reef.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave, best suited to shortboards and bodyboards. The lineup usually stays fairly quiet, though it can draw a decent pack when it's firing. Humility and respect go a long way out here. Keep the shallow reef and the chance of sharks in mind before you paddle out.

Access

Paddle straight out to the outside reef from Kiahuna Beach, where there's also a parking lot. Be ready for a long paddle, and note that currents can get bad at times.
