Poloa Bay is a right-hander that breaks over live coral on the west end of Tutuila, the island's best stretch of coast for surfing. A superb coastal road runs out this way, skirting several quality spots along the shore.
When It Works
The reef favours north (N) swell, and holds a window running from northwest to northeast. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, though it can be somewhat inconsistent. On the occasional north swell it really comes alive, turning fast and hollow.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The reef breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Be careful at low tide, when it tends to close out.
Local Tips
Poloa is an expert-level wave, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet. Keep in mind there's no surfing here on Sundays.
