Pomponio State Beach is a sand-bottomed beachbreak with both lefts and rights, similar in feel to nearby San Gregorio. It comes into its own when the surf is small and clean, and there's almost always something to ride here, even on the smallest summer days.
When It Works
Pomponio draws swell from south through north, with a southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and as a moderately consistent bank it tends to hold some kind of surf when many spots go flat.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. The bank breaks on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow, forgiving waves make this a good option for beginners, and the lineup usually stays quiet.
Access
You'll pay to park in the car park atop the cliff, and there are restrooms on site.
