Overview
Pontaillac is a small beach break tucked into a tiny bay right inside the city of Royan, between Vaux-sur-Mer and Royan. The bay shelters the beach from large swells and strong winds, so it only really comes to life when there is enough size to push in. It breaks over sand and offers both lefts and rights.
When It Works
Pontaillac needs size to get going, and it can be somewhat inconsistent as a result. It draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with west swell the best match. The break works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, but given the sheltered setup, it takes the bigger end of that window before the bay starts to show its waves.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean things up. The bay wants water on it: a rising tide is generally the better call, and it really needs a fuller, higher tide with some size behind it to be any good.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the lineup gets busy when it works. If swimmers or beginners fill the peak, nearby options like Nauzan or Suzac are worth a look.
Access
There is plenty of support close by, with restrooms, a lifeguard, camping, and a surf shop. For parking you have a car park with free parking, paid parking, and roadside spots to choose from.
