Porpoise Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Porpoise Bay is a rivermouth beach break that fires off a selection of hollow, powerful peaks over sand, with a bombie that wakes up on the bigger swells. It is friendly enough that mere mortal surfers will get plenty out of it, and Hectors dolphins often play around the lineup.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from southwest through southeast, with a south swell the best match for lining up those peaks. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and the sandy peaks break both left and right. When everything comes together this is a genuinely good wave.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west offshore wind to clean up the peaks. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The mellow, sandy setup makes this a solid option for beginners finding their feet. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it is on.

Access

Parking is easy, with free roadside spots right by the bay.
