Overview
Port Kembla is a stretch of reef and beachbreaks that keeps local surfers well fed. The standout is the left reef at the northern end, which serves up solid lefts with shelter from the northeast sea breezes. Pitching peaks run down the beach to the south and spread the crowd out nicely. Over Hill 60 you'll find a number of heavy, localised waves along MM Beach, including Bay and the fearsome Outer break, plus Ollies and its sucky jetty rights in front of the steelworks. A military reserve and a sewage works sit nearby, which adds to the danger around some of these reefs.
When It Works
The waves break over uneven reef and sand, and it's the lefts that do the talking here. Swell comes in from northeast through east-southeast to south, and east swell is the best match of the lot. The spot works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it takes a proper pulse to switch on but still holds size when the ocean gets serious. It's moderately consistent, so you won't score every session, but the windows are worth watching for.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind to groom the reef. It can work through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Intermediate surfers will get the most out of this place. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, though the peaks spreading south down the beach help share things around.
Access
There's a car park with free parking plus roadside spots if it fills up. Restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard are all on hand.
