Overview
North Beach Wollongong is a busy city beachbreak that peels over sand and throws up both lefts and rights. Not to be confused with its southern namesake, this stretch fronts a lively urban beach with full amenities close at hand.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S) and comes alive on a peaky northeast swell or a southerly pulse. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and with consistent surf on offer there's rarely a shortage of days to paddle out.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind to groom it clean; a northeast wind is the one that undoes it here. The bank works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With its forgiving beachbreak peaks, North Beach is a friendly option for beginners. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, in keeping with its city-beach setting.
Access
Amenities are plentiful, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. Getting parked is easy too, thanks to a car park with free parking alongside paid and roadside options.
