Overview
Port O'Connor Jetties sits on the Central Texas coast, where a pair of long jetties slices through the Matagorda Peninsula. The town is quiet during the week and fills with fishermen on weekends, and the break itself is a 20-plus minute boat ride out. Once you cross the island you'll find well-groomed sandbars over a sand bottom, and depending on the swell and wind either side of the jetties can turn on, so it pays to take a visual from the channel first. The waves peel both left and right, and the sheer length of the jetties lets this spot hold bigger swells than most breaks in the region.
When It Works
The sandbars come alive on swell from the east-southeast to south (ESE-S) window, with south and southeast swells the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, running anywhere from waist high to double overhead. Expect a decent, fun wave on most days with swell, but the real magic arrives when hurricanes track through the gulf on their way to a landfall further east. Spring and autumn are the seasons to target.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the northwest (NW), though north or west winds also do the job when there's swell in the water. The bank breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The jetties help in the lineup too, minimizing the drift as you sit and wait.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate and expert surfers, and the sandbars take everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, and even on its best days you'll rarely share the peak with more than a handful of others.
Access
Reaching the jetties takes a boat, so plan on the 20-plus minute ride from town and a walk across the island to get to the sand. It's genuinely isolated out here, so anchor your boat securely and pack sunscreen and plenty of water for the day.
