Port Waikato Left is a throaty left-hand point at the south end of Sunset Beach, where the current-scoured beach runs out at the headland cliffs and the wave peels over the rocks below. It breaks across a mix of uneven reef and sand, and when the sand joins the rocky fingers it throws up powerful walls and hollow sections. Before the onshore fills in late morning, you can also pick off transient peaks on the beachbreak nearby.
When It Works
The point draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there's a wide usable band once a decent southwest pulse is running. Consistency is moderate, meaning it won't fire every day but delivers when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. The point can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for expert surfers only. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
There's a car park with free parking and restrooms once you reach the beach. Port Waikato sits on the south side of the Waikato River mouth, and from the parking it's a walk around to the point. Take the entry seriously: getting on off the rocks is sketchy, which is a big part of why this left suits advanced to expert surfers only.
