Overview
Portballintrae is a swell-magnet beachbreak that pulls in surf thanks to deep offshore bathymetry and a shelving beach. When the wind cooperates it throws up powerful, hollow peaks, breaking both left and right over sand.
When It Works
The break draws swell from west to north (W-N), and lines up best on a northwest (NW) swell. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. The peak nearest the rivermouth is a favorite with bodyboarders.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind, since the peaks turn poor once it goes onshore. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a very crowded lineup right through summer.
Access
Park for free in Portballintrae and walk down to the beach from there. There's camping nearby if you want to stay close.
