Overview
Pottsville Beach is a long, lonely beachbreak set along a deserted and often sharky stretch of coast. The waves shift with the sandbars, which form and reshape over the sand and throw up both lefts and rights, so the setup changes from session to session. It stays quiet through most of the year until the big campsites fill with holidaymakers in summer. A fickle right and left can also form on either side of nearby Hastings Point, though it rarely shows its finer potential despite pulling in all the available swell.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from the northeast through southeast, and northeast is the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and holds up as a moderately consistent option when the banks line up. Being an open, linear stretch of coast, it does tend to blow out easily.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean it up. The break works through most of the tide across low, mid, and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow beachbreak suits beginners, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, at its busiest once the summer campers roll in. Keep a close eye on the rips, and stay shark-aware along this stretch.
Access
Facilities are solid for a beach day, with restrooms, showers, camping, and lifeguard cover. Parking is easy too, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid and roadside options.
