Overview
Póvoa do Varzim hides a high-class left that breaks off a large rock in the centre of the beach. The wave is short, sharp and shallow, and on its day it serves up open barrels over the uneven reef.
When It Works
The left draws swell from southwest to northwest (SW-NW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so you don't need a huge swell to get it breaking properly.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. Mid and high tide both work, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is strictly for expert surfers: it breaks fast and shallow over rock, and the take-off zone is tight. A quality southwest swell draws plenty of surfers to the peak, which can make the lineup a little tense.
Access
The beach is well set up, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard on duty, plus a surf school and surf shop nearby. For parking there's a car park and roadside spots, though expect to pay.
