Overview
Praia Castelejo is a remote and beautiful beach break on Portugal's coast, with lefts and rights peeling over sand and plenty of different options spread along the beach. Its setting is a big part of the appeal, but the openness comes at a price: the spot is very exposed to the wind, so it's worth checking the nearby coastline for a more sheltered alternative when conditions turn.
When It Works
The beach gathers maximum swell, pulling in anything from southwest through north, with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Autumn is normally better than spring, as the sandbars tend to get destroyed over the course of the winter by big storms.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind, and keep in mind how wind exposed the beach is; if it's blowing from the wrong direction, the nearby coastline may offer a better option. The waves break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call and high tide the best of all.
Local Tips
Castelejo suits beginners well, and with different peaks on offer there's usually somewhere along the beach to find a suitable wave.
Access
Despite the remote setting, getting sorted is easy: there's a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking.
