Overview
Praia da Luz is a whitewashed holiday village fronted by a curved sandy beach, bookended by a right point at the western edge, known as Rocha Negra, and a left at the eastern end. At its core it is an average beachbreak, but the points can fire in bigger swells and throw long, racing walls. The right breaks over a sloping reef and produces long, fast walls, while the left is a shallow, fast proposition. A small rivermouth in the middle of the bay can set up a fun sandbank of its own.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from west through north to southeast (W-N-SE), with southwest (SW) the best match. The points really come alive on a big NW or W swell, or a clean SW. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 4.9 m / 16 ft and holds anything from waist high to overhead. Winter is the season here, and it is at its best from December to February. Expect decent quality overall, with the points the standout when the size is up.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. The spot works right through the tides, with low, mid, and high all breaking on both rising and falling water, and low tide the best call.
Local Tips
Praia da Luz is beginner-friendly and takes a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. The lineup is usually quiet and gets busier when the points are firing, with a somewhat reserved atmosphere that turns more competitive when it is good. Keep in mind the points break over rocks, and the bay can get polluted after rain.
Access
There is a car park in the centre of the bay right by the beach, with free, paid, and roadside parking all available. Facilities include restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, and a surf school.
