Praia da Vila Imbituba is one of Brazil's premier big-wave beachbreaks, and probably the most consistent one in the country. If you have seen photos of surfers charging big rights with a rocky headland in the background and thought that looked like a seriously good Brazilian wave, chances are you were looking at this place. It is a long stretch of beach with two small islands sitting offshore, and the sandbars stack up into peaks that throw both rights and lefts. Where most sand-bottom beaches in this part of Brazil close out once the surf gets bigger, Praia da Vila keeps its shape into double-overhead surf, and bigger days happen. When it is on, the wave is long and powerful, though usually not hollow.
When It Works
Autumn and winter bring the best swells, but the beach breaks year-round and stays very consistent. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, drawing swell from northeast through south to south-southwest (NE-S-SSW), with south swell the best match and east also doing the job.
There are three general areas to read. In summer, a long left peels off the north island. Between the two islands, the hard sand bars serve up rights and lefts. And when the big winter swells march in from the south, the Sunset-like outside peak is where you want to be.
Wind and Tide
Look for west-northwest (WNW) offshore wind, with a workable window running west-northwest to northwest (WNW-NW). The beach can work through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Bring a shortboard for the everyday days and a gun for when it turns on. There is something here for beginners through to experts depending on the size, and the lineup is friendly, though expect it to be busy when it is working. The bigger it gets, the more the crowd thins out. Count on a long paddle back to the peak on the good days, and on a huge south to south-east swell take hold-downs and getting caught inside by a big set seriously. Water quality is fairly clean most of the time, but it drops off after rain when sewage mixes with the city's drainage.
