Overview
Puaena Point, also known as Puni's, is a reef break that peels into the Haleiwa boat channel, which shelters it from unruly north swells and gusty northeast trades. The rights are the main event, breaking over an uneven reef before drifting into the deep channel.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest swell the best match. After slamming the exposed outside point, the swell filters onto a shelf that sucks hard and barrels before letting up and drifting into the channel. That dominant right comes alive on northwest swell, while lefts appear when the swell swings more westerly. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and tends to be moderately consistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The reef breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call and mid tide best for the dominant right.
Local Tips
Puaena suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a busy lineup when it works. Keep an eye on the rip, which can turn nasty, and be aware that sharks patrol the harbour entrance.

There's a car park at the spot, along with restrooms, showers, and camping.
