Overview
Publics is one of the longest, most consistent lefts in the Waikiki area, peeling along the fringe of reef on the east flank of the bay. The lines look easy and inviting, but the wave breaks over shallow, live coral, and the fingers of reef reaching up from the bottom make it a spot for surfers who know what they are doing. High tide leaves the wave a little mushy but safer, while low tide sharpens it into a racier ride with the occasional tube section, along with a real chance of losing some skin on the reef.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast (SE) the best match, though most of the surf here shows up from the south to southwest. Because the reef sits a long way out and runs shallow, almost any pulse can find its uneven edge, which helps keep it moderately consistent. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly chest high up to a couple of feet overhead. Expect it to fire through spring, summer, and autumn, with the main window running from around April to October.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, which blows straight offshore here; calm mornings or anything from the northwest through east also keep it clean. The wave favors mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. If it is your first time out, a higher tide is the safer choice while you learn the reef.
Local Tips
Publics suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable dealing with a shallow reef and a tricky entry and exit. It handles a wide range of equipment, from shortboards and fishes to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup whenever it is waist high or bigger, so an early start can pay off. The vibe in the water is generally easygoing.
Access
Getting in from land is easy: park at Sans Souci State Recreational Park, with free, paid, and roadside options nearby, plus showers on hand. The paddle out and back is long, though it eases off once you are settled in the lineup.
