Puerto Azul is a right-hander that peels off the jetty guarding the mouth of the Rio Naiguatá, right in front of the private Puerto Azul club. It breaks over a sandbar, and when the bank is on form the rides run long. Worth knowing that the Rio Naiguatá isn't the cleanest water around.
When It Works
The wave draws its swell from a north-to-east window, and lines up best on a northeast (NE) swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. With its sand bottom it's moderately consistent, so you'll get worthwhile windows even if it doesn't fire every day.
Wind and Tide
A south (S) offshore wind grooms it cleanest. The bank works through most of the tide, though a rising tide is the stronger call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a quiet lineup when it's working, so there's usually room to find your own waves.
Access
A lifeguard keeps an eye on the beach, and parking is straightforward with free roadside spaces nearby.
