Overview
Puerto Cruz is a right-hand pointbreak that peels over an uneven, rocky reef. When it lines up, the rides are long enough to make the waiting worthwhile. The point sits in well-sheltered surroundings, tucked away from virtually any east or south wind, with big hotels and golf courses making up the backdrop.
When It Works
The point takes swell from northeast through east, and northeast is the direction that really switches it on. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there is decent room between a small clean day and a solid one. Consistency is the catch: it can be inconsistent, but the setup rewards patience when the right swell finally shows.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind, and keep in mind that the point is naturally protected from most east and south winds. It can work through the whole tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The long rocky point suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable reading a reef bottom. Expect a moderately busy lineup on the days it works.
