Punta Arena is a sandy beach break where a row of fishermen's huts lines a pretty stretch of coast. Most of the time it serves up little peelers close to shore, with the better peak tucked into the northern corner. It breaks both left and right and suits beginners looking for a mellow, forgiving wave.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northeast through east, and it comes alive best on a northeast swell. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so there's a workable window across small to head-high surf. Consistency is on the patchy side, so you'll want to time your session around a decent pulse. On the rare day when the swell is big enough to reach right through, the beach can throw out hollow waves, though locals reckon that only lines up a couple of times a year.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean things up. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is friendly, beginner-level terrain. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, and once it finally switches on you'll share the water with swimmers and a fair number of surfcraft.
