Overview
Punta Barigona is a left-hand point that peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand. When a decent-size swell wakes it up, the lefts run long and carry through to the inside Mar Azul section at high tide, where the walls turn plump and pedestrian. It is hard to call in advance whether you will be linking cutbacks or hunting cover-ups, so it is equally a day for a mal or a pintail. Around the point sits Bahia Barigona, a beautiful deep bay with protected waves and tide pools for the kids.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west, and southwest is the direction that really lights it up. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it takes a decent-size southwest pulse to bring those long lefts to life. Waves here are somewhat inconsistent, so it rewards patience and a bit of timing rather than a casual drop-in on any given day.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. The point works on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, with the inside Mar Azul section coming into its own as the water fills in.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave. Improvers can handle small Mar Azul on the inside, but the outside point asks for some experience before you paddle out. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works.
