Overview
Punta Burros is a fun, semi-soft right-hand reef about 40 minutes' drive from Puerto Vallarta, with a lower-quality left on offer too. The wave breaks over rock and coral, and the water stays relatively clean. It is forgiving enough to suit beginners, though the crowd is the real filter here. Paddling out takes a bit of work without being taxing.
When It Works
Summer is the season, when south swells deliver consistent fun. The spot picks up swell from south-southwest through west-northwest and is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, with chest-high to overhead the most enjoyable range. It is not a standout wave in the wider region, but when a summer south lines up it delivers exactly what it promises.
Wind and Tide
Look for north-northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north-northwest around to northeast. It works on low to mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Bring float. A longboard, funboard, or fish all suit the soft, rolling shape, though a shortboard works when there is enough size. Beginners through experts all find something here. Expect a moderately busy lineup, and note that this is a well-traveled stretch of coast. Locals dominate but are friendly, so a respectful approach and a bit of surfing ability will get you waves. Watch for rocks, urchins, and reef.
Access
Three ways in. Park at (or stay at) Palladium Vallarta Resort and walk 10 minutes to the wave. Park on the road to the resort and walk 20 minutes. Or hire a panga in El Enclote or one of the nearby small fishing villages.
