Punta Chipehua surf guide

Punta Chipehua is a bit off the beaten path, which gives it a remote vibe that some surfers appreciate. It's located near San Pedro Huamelula, and reaching it involves a long walk through huge sand dunes. These dunes were formed by a hurricane, as noted by a port captain from Salina Cruz. When the conditions are right, Punta Chipehua offers some decent waves for those willing to make the trek.

The surf here mainly works best with a solid south swell. When the swell is around 5ft (about 1.5 meters), you'll see nice right-hand point breaks that peel over uneven reef and sand. It’s usually good at low to mid tide, and while it doesn’t completely close out even when the waves are bigger, keep in mind that the NE-E trade winds, which can blow at 20 to 30 knots, don’t favor the spot. If you're intermediate, this could be a good spot for you to test your skills, just make sure the wind is coming from the west for the best session.

Besides the waves, it’s important to be prepared for the walk to get there. The remote access means you won’t have the usual amenities nearby, so pack accordingly. The sand dunes can be stunning, but they also take some energy to navigate, so bring plenty of water and snacks for the trip!
