Overview
Punta Huanchaco is a long left point that peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It's a mellow, forgiving wave rather than a hollow or heavy one, so surfers of every level can find something to work with. The wave can get sectiony, but on bigger days those sections link up and let you run from behind the point all the way past the pier.
When It Works
The point draws swell from the south through the west, and it's at its best on a southwest swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's a wide band of size to play with. Consistency is a real strength here, and the main season runs through autumn and winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind to clean it up. The point works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
It suits a broad quiver, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards, and its easygoing walls make it a friendly option for beginners. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved. Stay alert in the water and never turn your back to the ocean.

Getting in is straightforward, and the spot is backed by handy facilities including camping, a surf school, and a surf shop.
