Punta Negra sits due west of Paita on an empty, cliff-lined beach. It's a sand-bottomed beachbreak that breaks both left and right. Worth flagging that this is the Piura spot, not to be confused with other Punta Negras along the coast.
When It Works
This is really a small-swell option. It picks up just about any tiny swell that's out there, and when one shows it can send fast lefts across the straight sandbars instead of shutting down. It draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with northwest (NW) the best match, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency is moderate, so count on worthwhile windows rather than waves every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to groom it. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow beachbreak suits beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Getting here is a mission of picking out the right dirt roads down to the beach. Once you're in the water, watch for the rocks clustered at the south end.
