Overview
Punta Prieta, also known as El Brujo, is an exposed, wind-affected reefbreak in Peru. When it comes together it can line up some fun, shorter left sections, and there are a few beach peaks breaking to the north. In truth, though, this one is mostly worth the detour for the archaeology at El Brujo, where discoveries of ancient civilisations have been unearthed.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from the south through southwest (S-SW), and south swell is the best match. It is really a small-swell setup, with the cleaner left sections showing up on smaller S pulses. Waves peel left over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and the spot works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows rather than waves on every check.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, though it can also clean up under glassy conditions or a light east breeze. The reef holds through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it is on.
