Overview
Punta Uvita is a whale-tail-shaped point that serves as the gateway to Marino Ballena, one of only two marine parks in Costa Rica. The point and a scatter of offshore islands filter incoming swell, sheltering soft, nicely shaped beachbreaks that peel both left and right over sand. There's something here for everyone, and on the odd day it can turn hollow and near-perfect for advanced surfers.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through southwest (S-SW), with south swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and since it's only moderately consistent, it pays to time your paddle-out for when the swell fills in.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to groom the faces. The banks break right through the tide, from low to high, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
With gentle, well-shaped waves, Punta Uvita is a friendly spot to learn, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet. The park entrance fee helps keep numbers down compared with nearby breaks, so it rarely feels busy when it's on.
Access
Take the second access road into the park and pay the entrance fee. All the park's facilities are on hand, along with a local surf school that calls this its home break, and there's paid parking, though it's restricted. It's also a great place to hang out between sessions.
