Overview
Putsborough is a quality beachbreak at the southern end of Woolacombe Sands, tucked under the huge mass of Baggy Point. The headland shelters it from the southerly and southwesterly winds that wreck nearby spots, though it also keeps the waves a foot or two smaller than its neighbours. When the banks line up, it can throw hollow rides almost on par with better-known, more crowded Croyde.
When It Works
The sandy beach draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with west swell the best match, and it peels both left and right. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. This is really an autumn and winter spot, roughly September through February, because it needs the bigger swells to come alive. On those solid winter swells the banks turn peaky and hollow and can be genuinely fun, but it is an inconsistent performer and won't fire on smaller days.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. It works across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is the better call and the bank can wash out at high.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly beachbreak that suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, with a somewhat reserved but tolerant feel. When it's big, keep clear of the rips that run by the headland.
Access
Parking is easy, with a paid car park overlooking the waves behind the café. The road down to the beach is narrow and winding. There are restrooms, showers, and camping above the beach.
