Overview
Rabo de Peixe is a left-hand semi-pointbreak that breaks almost inside the harbour wall, the same wall that destroyed a better wave of the same name that once ran outside it. The wave peels over boulders and has real range: vertical take-offs, powerful pockets and fast sections that can soften into easier drops and cutback shoulders depending on size, swell direction and tide.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), with northeast (NE) the best match. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. On smaller days the wave breaks tight to the rocks, so watch for sneaker sets; as the swell builds it pushes further out and breaks wider.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. The tight take-off zone and easy access make it a known localism hotspot, so read the lineup before you drop in.
Access
Park down at the end of the harbour wall and paddle out from the ladders. There's free roadside parking and restrooms nearby. Be aware it's a dodgy area, with residential pollution from the ramshackle homes on the cliff top, including sewage, stormwater and broken glass thrown off the cliffs.
